A Brief Information about UAW-Ford 500 NASCAR Racing
The UAW-Ford 500 is a NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car race held at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama. The UAW Ford 500 is also one of four races currently run with restrictor plates, the others being the Aaron's 499, the Pepsi 400, and the Daytona 500. Through 1996, the race was normally held in early August or late July. In 1997, it was moved, after overwhelming fans' requests, to early October due to the uncomfortably hot summer temperatures in the Alabama area.
At the UAW-Ford 500 in the 2005 NASCAR season, Dale Jarrett ended a 98-race drought by winning at Talladega Superspeedway, while Tony Stewart reclaimed his spot on top of the Nextel Cup standings and Jimmie Johnson fell along with his reputation and championship hopes.
Jarrett used a three-wide pass to challenge Stewart for the lead on the final lap of a three-lap overtime shootout, then passed Stewart on the backstretch in the UAW-Ford 500 for his first victory since 2003 at the now-defunct North Carolina Speedway.
Stewart finished second, Matt Kenseth was third and Newman fourth. The finish at the UAW-Ford 500 put Stewart back on top of the Chase for the championship leader board after the third of 10 races. He eventually won the 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup.
