A Brief Information about Gatorade Duel NASCAR Racing
The Gatorade Duel, or the Gatorade 125, is an exhibition event to the Daytona 500 held each February at Daytona International Speedway. It consists of two races of 150 miles each. They are usually held; weather permitting, on the Thursday prior to the actual Nextel Cup race on Sunday.
This year’s winners for the Gatorade Duel were Michael Waltrip winning the Gatorade 1 and Tony Stewart winning the Gatorade 2. Qualifying for the Daytona 500 is unique in NASCAR. Only the pole-sitter and the driver to the outside of him, or the outside pole are determined by the ordinary qualifying process of timed laps. The rest of the qualifying field, and their order of start, are determined by the drivers' placement in these two races, each of which consists of half of the rest of the drivers attempting to qualify, with the better placements obviously going to the most successful drivers.
Although famous for hosting the Daytona 500, the Gatorade Duel is part of the track, which boasts the most sole racing schedule of events in the world. The Daytona International Speedway opened in 1959 with the running of the opening Gatorade Duel, then the Gatorade 125, which was won by the legendary Lee Petty in a photo finish over Johnny Beauchamp, that took officials three days to decide. With that historic event, Gatorade recognized itself as one of the world’s premiere motor sports facilities.
