The Sharpie 500 is a NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car race held at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. It is one of two NASCAR Nextel Cup races held at Bristol, the other being the Food City 500. The Sharpie 500 is by far the more popular of the two. Since 1977, the race has been held in mid-August on a Saturday night, and is considered among the most difficult ticket to obtain in sports, with waiting lists for this event one of the longest in sports.
The win for Matt Kenseth in the last Sharpie 500 was vital in his run at the NASCAR Nextel Cup. Two months before the race, his season looked as if it was in shambles; his chances of racing for the Nextel Cup title slim to none. A frantic late-season surge changed everything.
Kenseth used his first victory in more than a year, at the time, to inch closer to the Chase for the championship, winning the Sharpie 500 in dominating fashion. He started from the pole and led a whopping 415 of the 500 laps to win for the first time since March 7, 2004. After struggling for more than a year, Kenseth turned it on and vaulted from 20th in the standings to 11th.
Although the Sharpie 500 was the only win for Kenseth in the 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, he finished 7th overall in the standings and almost $5.8 million in winnings. Kenseth also had twelve top 5 finishes and 17 top 10 finishes.
